Make a Pop-Up Cylinder
From the book The Pocket Paper Engineer, Volume 2

Finished pop-up cylinder

The pop-up cylinder is a floating platform with rounded sides. Its circular top serves as the platform, held up by a strong center tab concealed inside. The two side tabs of the platform are the sides of the cylinder itself.

To start this project, download the PDF file of the cylinder pattern and cut it out along the outer solid black lines. Gently score and fold along the broken lines. (Don't worry if the folds are mountains or valleys. You can always reverse them later). Keep the pattern lines on the outside as you construct the cylinder so you can refer to them as you go.

Remember, solid black lines are cut lines, broken lines are fold lines, and diagonally slashed areas are glue spots

Cylinder step #1

1 Fold panel 1 onto the adjoining slashed panel marked 1 and glue these panels together. This creates an extra-strong center support for the cylinder.

  Cylinder step #2

2  Glue Tab 2 to the unprinted underside of the circular top. The fold along the tab should align with the fold in the circle.

         Cylinder step #3

3  To flatten the center strut, fold the circular top inward (a valley fold) . Then fold the panel with tab 6 down against the center strut.

                Cylinder step #4

4
Glue Tabs 3 and 4 into place onto the diagonally slashed areas marked 3 and 4.

      Cylinder step #5

5 Fold a piece of card stock in half. Apply glue to Tab 5. (Be careful not to get glue on the panel behind tab 5.) Position the scalloped edge of the glued tab along the fold of the card.

 Cylinder step #6

5 Apply glue to Tab 6 and fold the card down onto the glued tab. When you open the card, your finished cylinder should pop up.
